Reflections on Tiṅ-Tattva from the Perspective of Śabdārtharatna

Abstract: In my research paper, the verbal suffix ‘Tiṅ’ is presented. Since a word is defined as the combination of a base and a suffix (prakṛti-pratyaya-samudāyaḥ), it is essential to explain the different types of bases and suffixes as well. Bases are of two types: nominal bases (nāma) and verbal roots (dhātu). Similarly, suffixes are also twofold: nominal suffixes (sup) and verbal suffixes (tiṅ). Here, the true nature and characteristics of tiṅ are discussed. In this context, the ten tenses/moods (daśa lakārāḥ) are examined. Following this, the concept of time (kāla-tattva) is presented. While explaining the concept of time, the viewpoints of Nāgeśa Bhaṭṭa and Kauṇḍa Bhaṭṭa have also been delineated.
